I have worked for North Tyneside Council since the mid 80’s starting my career in Sport and Leisure at the old Killingworth Sports Centre. I continued my path within service “doing time” at every sports centre and swimming pool in the borough at some point.
I have been a UNISON member since it’s inception, previously being in NUPE and became an activist around 2011 after needing some UNISON support myself. At this point I decided to get a better understanding of what our branch and UNISON actually does. I soon realised that the services on offer should be a fundamental and supported part of our lives and decided to become more involved.
I have since benefitted from UNISON training, attending UNISON Health & Safety and Steward courses and gained IOSH Health & Safety accreditation along the way.
I joined the branch officer team in 2015 as Assistant Branch Secretary and became one of our two Branch Health & Safety Officers in 2016. With constant performance management, the permanent threat of redundancy and constant workload pressures impacting on my colleagues I feel proud to be part of the UNISON team effectively supporting and protecting them.
