Elayn Miller

I have been an employee of North Tyneside Council for 30 years working originally in Housing Technical thereafter Adults, and a UNISON member throughout.

Whilst working in a multidisciplinary team within the Adaptations Team and based in hospital settings, communication was limited from UNISON. Because of this I became more active and became a Steward to fill the communication gaps, and also wanted to right the wrongs.

Since May 2012 I have held the position of Assistant Branch Secretary

With only 4 full time officers covering around 4000 UNISON members, with many different employers and diverse areas of work, specialisms within the branch are a luxury. I do generally cover HECS and EH&L, and I am the lead officer for Capita, but we go where we are needed.

I am a link officer for several stewards, which involves guidance, mentoring and support. Should anyone be interested to get more involved please do not hesitate to get in touch.

I hear a great deal “what does UNISON do for me?” It isn’t just about an individuals particular issue on any given day. A lot of work is carried out behind the scenes, such as negotiating on restructures, being involved in policy changes, fighting to protect terms and conditions.

Never forget a union is only as strong as it’s members. If we stick together we are a stronger force.
