Health and Safety

Promoting health and safety at work is one of the core functions of the branch as employers have clear legal duties to make sure that employment does not cause death, injury or ill-health. Health & Safety is everybody’s issue and as a trade union we believe it is not something which can be left to management. Your Branch Health & Safety Officer’s are busy;

  • Making sure Members, Safety Reps and Branch Officers are aware of Health & Safety issues
  • Co-ordinating the activity of Safety Reps, and convening regular meetings with them
  • Organising the information held by the branch on Health & Safety
  • Acting as a link between Safety Reps and other Branch Officers
  • Reporting on Health & Safety issues at branch meetings, committee meetings and annual meetings
  • Liaising with relevant Officers about priorities for Health & Safety training, opportunities and campaigns
  • Investigate complaints on behalf of Members
  • Take up issues they notice or that Members bring to their attention
  • Consultating with employers on H&S policies and procedures such as Risk Assessments, Control of Blood Bourne Virus, Disqualification By Association, Discipline and Resolution, Inspection Procedures and COSHH
  • Representing the Branch at Regional Health & Safety Committees
  • Representing UNISON at NTC Executive and Corporate Health & Safety Forums
  • Attending NTC workplace and building audits
  • Promoting the role of the Health and Safety rep to members

You don’t need to be a Health & Safety expert to consider taking on a Safety Rep’s role as UNISON provides comprehensive training for everybody. To find out more about the role and how UNISON can help with training and information, please contact your branch Health & Safety officers and check out all the up and coming dates for training sessions.
