UNISON is one of the UK’s largest trade unions, serving more than 1.3 million members.
In North Tyneside we are one of 43 branches from across all areas of public service that make up the Northern Region.
Our Branch represents over 4000 full, part-time and casual staff who provide public services, although they may be employed in both the public and private sectors.
What we do
We deal with a wide range of workplace issues such as restructures and redundancy issues, supporting members with disciplines, sickness management and grievances.
We also provide welfare support and social opportunities along with a range of member benefits, including access to legal services and a range of discounts on things such as insurances, travel, holiday accommodation and car purchases.
In North Tyneside our members come from across a wide range of employers.
We have members in;
North Tyneside Council
Regardless of your work area, service or job role UNISON is the most appropriate union for Council employees.
Unlike some other unions we only specialise in public services and are the largest union operating in North Tyneside Council (and the largest national public service union) and able to offer unrivalled support and assistance to our members.
With 4 full time Branch Officers, a local Stewards network covering most work areas and an excellent regional team for additional support we can provide you with help with your situation or problem.
NTC Partners – Capita and Engie
Over the last 10 years the Council has embarked on a number of partnership schemes with the private sector who now deliver services on the Council’s behalf. The employees in this area are a mix of former NTC staff who were TUPE’d across or seconded when the different contracts were formed, or staff who have been directly employed by the partner organisation. Regardless of your type of employment you are entitled to be a UNISON member and receive the full range of support and services that we offer at a Branch, Regional and National level.
Schools, Colleges and Nurseries
If you work in a support capacity in any educational establishment, we are the union for you.
Our members include staff who are in job roles such as teaching assistants, catering staff, cleaning staff, admin support and technical support. We are very active in the education field and have a network of Stewards who work in schools who are supported by a Branch Officer and a Regional Organiser. Some of the typical things we assist our members with include;
- Schools transferring to Trusts
- School mergers
- Developing a National Professional Standards for Teaching Assistants
- Promoting the annual ‘Stars in Our Schools’ event for non teaching staff.
- In addition to this we also provide every member with the support, assistance and representation of UNISON in times of personal difficulty, be that in the workplace or at home.
Care Homes and Facilities Management
In the past local authorities and other public sector organisations directly employed staff in services such as Care and Nursing Homes, Fire and Ambulance Stations but like so many other areas a lot of these services have been transferred across to the third party private sector organisations.
That doesn’t exclude you from being a UNISON member.
If you work for an organisation that is contracted to deliver support or services to a public organisation you are still entitled to join us, and will receive all of the support that we have on offer from the local North Tyneside Branch, with additional support from the Regional and National Office’s should the need arise.
